The Blur.

How much detail of their surroundings do you think a drag racer takes in?  The field of vision must be exceptionally narrow while he speeds down the straight-away at over 300 miles per hour.  I doubt the driver noticed the exceptional relief of billowing clouds just in front and above him, or the most adorable freckles on the smiling face of the 8 year old girl just to the right in the front row of the stands.  Nor did he likely notice the patch of brilliant yellow spring Crocus emerging just to the left in the median of the track.  The faster you go, the less you see.

I learned this while floating three feet above a reef on the island of Antigua.  In an expression of gratitude, the people we were serving on the mission trip took the team to a beach for some rest.  Although the natives did not know for sure, they thought there was some good snorkeling just 100 yards off the beach; they were right, but I almost missed it.

As a few of us quickly made our way out to the reef we excitedly tracked along the long narrow reef.  It seemed pristine; yet we saw very little life as we cruised above.  In short order we made it to the end of the reef and surfaced to express our disappointment.  The other two sped off to find some better snorkeling, and I decided to track back the same way I came.  But after a few kicks I noticed something wrong with my snorkel.  As I fooled with it, my eyes softened their focus and just stared at one spot in the reef and there it was – abundant life.

It took us 10 min to survey the reef on the first pass.  It took me two hours to see the reef on the way back.
The faster you go, the less you see.  Slow down, soften your focus and there it will be – abundant life.

The Blur

Pastor Steve,
How true this is. With my wife and I having opposite work schedules evening life gets kind of busy. With kids activities, chores, dinner, homework, and laundry things tend to get busy and go fast. I miss out on alot of things and poof the kids are grown. Now I try to focus on hanging out with them and playing games and teaching them things than laundry and chores. I realize how much I missed out on and have so much fun just being and not running. Life can go bye very fast if your in the wrong lane. Isn't it time we got to the right and let others pass and enjoy what the Lord has put on the preverbial highway of life....Thanks..

Great analogy. We all need

Great analogy. We all need to remember to slow down in this fast paced life. Thanks for the reminder.
